When Is It OK to Cut Ties with Family?

Ending a relationship with a family member can be challenging, but it may be required at times, even if only temporarily. In episode 123, we discuss this delicate subject, recounting our encounters with troublesome family members and sharing our strategies for handling such situations. From an early age, we are often instilled with the belief that family bonds are permanent and that it is unacceptable to cut ties with a family member. During my upbringing in Brazil, witnessing relatives engage in conflicts or end relationships was an uncommon occurrence. The family structure was prioritized over disagreements and was expected to remain strong and unbroken. However, as I matured, established my own family, I came to understand that our family members are not flawless and can sometimes have stark differences from us, leading to considerable challenges in maintaining the relationship.

I've come to realize that it's OK to end a relationship with a family member. It's important to prioritize our own mental and emotional health, so continuing a relationship with a relative, whether distant or close, who causes unhappiness and feelings of being unappreciated may not be beneficial. This doesn't imply cutting off all communication forever. It means that, for the time being, both parties may find greater happiness by taking a break, allowing time to reassess the situation, address any underlying issues affecting the relationship, and consider forgiveness or seeking forgiveness when the timing is appropriate.

In conclusion, if you find yourself in a similar situation with a family member, remember that you are not alone. It is more common than you may realize. Allow yourself time and compassion to navigate the circumstances, and don't feel guilty if you decide to distance yourself from that person. Ultimately, you will likely see that it was the best decision for both parties. This does not imply that you should cut ties over trivial matters. The focus here is on dealing with highly challenging relationships that significantly affect your well-being. In such cases, it is acceptable, in my view and also in Veronique's opinion, to part ways.
