Superstitions are curious beliefs that linger behind our rational minds, often seem like something old and outdated. However, these fascinating beliefs persist across cultures, carrying tales of folklore, tradition, and sometimes unusual rituals.
Let's embark on a journey through Brazil and France (mainly the Caribbean), exploring the types of superstitions that color their societies!
Brazil:
Jumping Over Waves on New Year's Eve: It's believed that jumping seven waves at midnight on New Year's Eve brings luck and grants seven wishes—one for each wave.
Garlic and Salt: Placing garlic or salt near the entrance of the house is believed to ward off evil spirits or negative energy.
French Caribbean:
The Shape-Shifting Witch: The legend of the Soucouyant is a prominent superstition in the French Caribbean. Believed to be a female witch who sheds her skin at night to fly in the form of a fireball, she sucks the blood of her victims. To ward her off, people often place salt or pepper around their homes, as it's believed she must count every grain before entering.
Taboos and Respect for Elders: Respect for elders is a deeply ingrained value in Caribbean culture. Breaking taboos or disrespecting elders is believed to bring about curses or bad luck. This belief fosters a culture of reverence and tradition within families and communities.
